Brookfield Zoo: African Painted Puppies

At the end of March, DrQuuxum and I headed out on our annual road trip. This year, we set out for Chicago with their plethora of zoos. There are FOUR AZA zoos in Chicago: Lincoln Park, Brookfield, Shedd Aquarium, and Cosley. And there’s the Field Museum with Sue. Sadly, a bout with food poisoning limited us to just Brookfield and Shedd. On the way home, we stopped at the Toledo Zoo; so we did at least make three zoos on this trip. And we were left with an excuse to return to Chicago at some point.

Brookfield Zoo’s African Painted Dogs gave birth to 10 puppies last November. They, with Mom and Dad and Uncle, are out on exhibit. I probably spent an hour there, taking pictures.

today’s editing project

Mom suggested a silhouette of her driving Ghost (her current show horse) might be a popular design for my cafepress store. A silhouette would create an image that was not distinctly she and Ghost, so there would be more appeal to others who drive miniature horses. We browsed through her photographs and found this one:

Cafepress in Green

In October, I realized that I had made enough money playing in cafepress that I could buy three months of a premium store. And, realizing those three months would be the fourth quarter Christmas rush, I jumped on the idea. The difference between the free store and the premium store is the number of items you can offer. The free store allows only one of each kind of item (tee shirt, long sleeve tee, mug, …). The premium store offers all items with as many designs as you want to put on them. The last month has been quite busy with taking and sorting pictures, editing them, adding them to the site and picking the products on which to put them.
I have a hard time finding things to put on some of the color schemes that cafepress offers. I mentioned here my victory in finding something for the hideous yellow tee shirt and messenger bag (hideous mostly because the color comes through whatever artwork you use, not just because I’m not a yellow person).
There is also a green tee shirt that has the same bleed through issue as the yellow. Tonight I found something that I think goes pretty well on it.

Proof I’ve lived in Pittsburgh for too long

After all of the photo editing and posting this weekend, a friend commented that she would love to buy my rainy heron on a tee shirt from my cafepress store. That started another whirlwind of photo poking and resulted in quite a few new items up at the site.
Cafepress offers yellow tee shirts and messenger bags. I always found them to be rather hideous with photos as the color shows through. But I came up with the perfect use for them today. I offer proof that I’ve lived in Pittsburgh too long.

Finally playing with the baby photos

Earlier this summer, I spent a couple afternoons out at Mom’s farm taking pictures of this year’s foals. I finally had a chance to sit down and play with some of the resulting images. There are lots of photos up on Flickr (check the sidebar) and here’s one that I edited for use on Cafepress:

So far, Mom’s my biggest customer, but I’m having fun designing stuff. I think that many of my images are best suited to journals and cards and the like, so I may eventually look into getting a paid account. The free account only lets you make one item of each kind.

Some friends came out to the farm to meet the babies. Here’s one of my favorites from that evening’s photo shoot:
